The Lamborghini Miura, the most famous high-performance car ever to be produced in Italy, is about to celebrate its 40th birthday. Automobili Lamborghini will begin the official celebrations of this anniversary at the Techno Classica 2005 in Essen, Germany (7th-10th of April). The celebrations will continue throughout 2006 with a series of events involving The House of Sant’Agata Bolognese, Lamborghini Clubs, and numerous customers and enthusiasts from all over the world.

Presented as a concept car in 2003 in Detroit – where it generated significant interest among Italian supercar enthusiasts – the production version of the Murciélago Roadster will make its official debut at the Geneva Show 2004. Manufacture and sales are planned for the second half of this year for the Roadster. The latest arrival at the House of the Raging Bull takes its inspiration from the great Italian tradition of open vehicles.

On the occasion of the 2003 IAA in Frankfurt Lamborghini unveils a race car concept derived from its acclaimed super sports car, the Lamborghini Murcielago. The Murcielago R-GT, developed jointly with race experts Reiter Engineering and mother company Audi’s sport division, Audi Sport, will offer Lamborghini clients a highly competitive car to participate in professional motorsport events on a international level.

Ferruccio Lamborghini – born under the zodiac sign of Taurus – when he founded the famous super car company, that since then bears his name, gave to it the symbol of the fighting bull. Later, in the ’60 decade, when the Miura was introduced, he named the car after a famous bull’s race, and this practice became a tradition for the House of the Bull. Honouring this tradition, the Management of Automobili Lamborghini have decided to baptize their latest model with the name of a fighting bull’s breed: the Gallardo (pron.: ga:yàrdo).

Suddenly, a new Lamborghini has got more affordable. Well, slightly – the new Gallardo should cost around £110,000 when gets here later this year, a handy £50,000 less than the V12 Murcielago. Looking a little like a miniature of its bigger brother – a demerit, in the eyes of some – the Gallardo is powered by a 500bhp mid-mounted 5.0-litre V10 engine and comes with four-wheel drive and a six-speed transmission. The need-to-know performance figures read like this: 62mph comes up in 4.2 seconds, and its top speed runs to 192mph.

The whole mystique of Automobili Lamborghini is related to the man who had the inspiration, the skill and the determination to turn a dream into a reality. Ferruccio Lamborghini was born in Renazzo, a little village near Bologna, on the 28th of April 1916. His parents were farmers but Ferruccio did not inherit from them the love of the land and, from the very early days of his life, he showed an interest in technology and mechanics. He completed his technical studies in Bologna and soon after was able to put his know-how to the test when during the Second World War he was put in charge of vehicle maintenance in Rhodes, Greece.

In the late afternoon of October 5th 1879, after a fierce fight in the arena of Cordoba, a bull named Murciélago from Joaquin del Val di Navarra’s farm, had his life spared by the famous matador Rafael Molina “Lagartijo”. This was a very rare occurrence in bullfighting, and an honour accorded only to those bulls that have shown exceptional courage and spirit in the arena. And Murciélago was indeed such a bull.
