For a reason: Unconventional automobiles of this kind are not only very versatile but also make a visual statement for their owners Driving fun and strong product quality as well as an attractive price performance ratio are also very important. These are exactly the requirements met by the new CrossPolo. The strong demand for smart vehicles of this kind can be seen in the CrossPolo predecessor, the Polo Fun. Three times the original units projected were ordered by customers.

The successor of the Polo Fun already stands out of the sea of compact cars. Thanks to its modified chassis, it has a 15 millimeter higher ground clearance and therefore can handle even though roads better. With the standard 17″ alloy “BBS Radial spoke” wheels in the robust eight-spoke design, the CrossPolo gains 32 millimeter in height. The measurement up to the roof railing of the new Volkswagen is a full 70 millimeters higher than other versions of the Polo series (total height: 1,537 millimeter). The CrossPolo is 3,925 millimeters long and 1,671 millimeters wide.
The roof railing in matte silver, which resembles that of a sporty station wagon, comes standard not only for visual reasons. It is also a classical way to anchor the mounting system and roof boxes. The maximum load is 75 kilogram.
The precisely tailored body structure of the CrossPolo, which can easily be seen in the slim splice gradient (gap measurements between doors, hood and bumpers), marks the high quality demands of Volkswagen. It is also a reflection of the excellent torsion stiffness which makes these narrow splice measurements possible in the first place.
A continuous line shows the interplay of all body elements visible from the outside. That’s why the silver painted outside mirrors harmonize visually with the metal theme of the roof railing. The modified front spoiler with standard fog headlights also integrates this design element. The central air vent in the front spoiler received a matte aluminum-look frame and has been shaped to resemble a robust underride protection. Something similar can be found in the middle of the rear bumper which also received a new design. All other body features of the all-around protection (bumpers, side running board, wheel arch) are made of an impact-resistant, anthracite synthetic, which is color coordinated with the silver body elements as well as the CrossPolo body paint.
Apart from the model-specific attributes, the front part of the CrossPolo also displays the v-shaped radiator grill, which is characteristic of many new Volkswagens, and the lateral connected head lights. Their elliptical form is also part of the v-theme dominating the front section: The distinctive line design extends from the A columns over the hood and the outlined radiator grill to the air vent located underneath. The black honeycomb structure resembling the Polo GTI underscores the sporty appearance.
One look at the silhouette also distinguishes the CrossPolo as a unique model. The 7.5″ wide and 17″ diameter alloy rims with their 215/40 ZR wheels competently fill out the wheel casing enclosed in a robust widened design. The widened design merges with the running boards, which extend up to the doors and give the car an extremely solid and powerful character.
The six new body colors available for the CrossPolo provide a harmonious contrast to the applications. The color palette ranges from “Magma-Orange” and (first introduced for the Polo Fun) “Lime” over “Flash-Red”, “Black-Magic” and “Ravenna-Blue” to “Reflex-Silver”. Colors like “Magma-Orange” and “Lime” particularly highlight the unique character of the CrossPolo: It is a car that conceptually shows true can-do qualities and at the same time stands for a positive attitude towards life.
Another dynamic accent is the hatchback. The windshield has a slight v-shaped design at the bottom, which gives the CrossPolo a dynamic look. Adding to the robust off-road design is the middle end of the underside of the rear bumper which was described above. With its silver metal visual design, it resembles an underride protection.
The doorknobs, the hatchback handle and the top protection strip are all painted to match the body color. The CrossPolo, which is only available in a five-door version, has a logo directly above the protection strip.
Interior

With its functional design and especially with the interior colors “Orange” and “Lime”, the inside of the CrossPolo provides a youthful and pleasant atmosphere. The color “Gray” offers a more reserved feel. “Orange” can be combined with the body colors “Magma-Orange” and “Black-Magic”; “Lime” is available with “Lime” and “Black-Magic”. The interior shade “Gray” can be combined with “Flash-Red”, “Ravennablue”, “Reflexsilver” and “Black-Magic”.
The various fabric covers (Design: “Dimension”) are not only used in the front and rear sport comfort seats, held in a basic gray tone, but also in the door lining. Distinctive: The honeycomb structure incorporated in the seat flank and upper rear part as well as the seams held in the respective special tone. Pleasant grip: The four-spoke steering wheel covered with perforated leather. Just like the seats, the seams are stepped in contrasting color. The gear shift knob and leather parking brake lever also received a colored seam. Additionally the gear shift knob is refined with an independent lens displaying the CrossPolo logo. Chrome rings enhance the instrument panel and aluminum enhances the pedal caps.
The CrossPolo is also an all-around talent when it comes to transporting luggage. In its basic configuration the trunk is 270 liters. If needed, the rear seat back can be folded down in seconds and thus expand the cargo area up to 1,030 liters. Even bulky items or recreational equipment for the weekend are no problem anymore. The optional split rear seat back provides even more flexibility. Seat backs and seats can be individually folded in proportions of 1/3 to 2/3.
The fact is: Once the doors of the CrossPolo are closed, it’s hard to tell which category of car you have just gotten into. This is due to good space proportions, the quality of the seat arrangement, the clearly laid out cockpit with its ergonomical configuration of round instruments and the quality of the materials. All elements are so impressive that the usual category delineations become indistinct.
- Five economic motors, two transmissions with a performance range of 47 kW to 74 kW
The newly designed CrossPolo also proves its versatile qualities in the motor area. There are three gas fuel engines and two diesel engines with a performance range of 47 kW / 64 PS to 74 kW / 100 PS to choose from. They are transmitted via a five gear transmission that comes standard. The CrossPolo has the right motor for every use and taste, whether it’s the economical basic version, the dynamic alternative or the economical diesel engine with strong torque. It goes without saying that all motors comply with the Euro4 emission standard. Customer oriented: The service intervals are not static anymore, but transmitted to the driver via a service indicator in the cockpit. This way the maximum possible interval is two years or 30,000 kilometers (TDI: 50.000 kilometers). Motor Overview:
CrossPolo 1.2 4V with 47 kW / 65 PS
The introductory level is represented by the very economical three cylinders, twelve valves with 1.2 liter cubic capacity and a performance of 47 kW / 65 PS. Motor block and cylinder head are made of aluminum. The camshafts (DOHC) located at the top are powered by a chain drive. Easy running roller cam followers for the valves ensure marginal friction loses. Thanks to its differential gear shaft, the three cylinders runs as smoothly as a four cylinder. Among other things, the 1.2 liter motor distinguishes itself through low fuel consumption and emission rates. On average, the aggregate only consumes 6.2 liters of unleaded fuel every 100 kilometers. Its maximum speed is 157 km/h; it reaches 100 km/h in 16.5 seconds.
CrossPolo 1.4 4V with 55 kW / 75 PS
The 1.4 liter four cylinders with 55 kW / 75 PS offers dynamic driving performance. Just like the little three cylinder, it is made completely of aluminum. The camshaft drive system however runs via a tooth belt. The valve operation is identical. At only 2200/rpm, 90 percent of the maximum torque moment is already available. It reaches its height at 126 Newton meters (at 3,800 rpm). At the same time the 16 valve is impressive in the often used part-load operational range with a low fuel consumption, which averages 6.7 liter. With this engine design the CrossPolo’s maximum speed is 166 km/h and it accelerates in only 14.3 seconds to 100 km/h. The CrossPolo with this engine can be ordered with an automatic transmission for those who like the convenience.
CrossPolo 16V with 74 kW / 100 PS
The 74 kW / 100 PS strong four cylinder gas fuel engine which also has 1.4 liter cubic capacity, and is basically closely related to the above described 55 kW aggregate has a sporty temperament. Its agile turning performance is characteristic. It turns briskly and with very low vibrations up to 6,000 / rpm high. Its torque moment is also 126 Newton meters (4,400 / rpm). With this engine design, the CrossPolo reaches a speed of 100 after 12.1 seconds on the stopwatch. Its maximum speed is 183 km/h. Despite its performance, its average fuel consumption is only 6.8 liters of super plus. In mid 2006, this motor will also be available in combination with an automatic transmission.
CrossPolo 1, 4V with 51 kW / 70 PS
With the three cylinders TDI with 51 kW / 70 PS, the CrossPolo is economic and strong at the same time. As with the gas fuel engines, the cylinder head consists of an aluminum composition. In the top of the cylinder head, a tooth belt powers a cam shaft which activates four valves per combustion chamber via a bucket tappet. Because of the higher combustion pressure common in diesel motors, the motor block is made out of gray cast iron. At the same time, this material contributes to noise reduction. At 1,600 rpm a torque moment of 155 Newton meters is available. The torque maximum remains until 2,800 rpm. Pump valve direct injection, turbocharger and compartment air cooling provide a good torque moment feature, as well as fun on saving. The 1.4 TDI CrossPolo can travel up to 160 km/h and only uses an average of 4.9 liters every 100 kilometers. It reaches 100 km/h in 15.9 seconds.
The CrossPolo 1.9 TDI with 74 kW / 100 PS
The modern 1.9 liter pump valve competently impacts 240 Newton meter torque valve onto its crank shaft. And this at only 1,800 rpm. Result: A strong acceleration even when only in the part-load operational range. The four-cylinder reaches its maximum performance of 74 kW / 100 PS at 4,000 rpm. Obviously this means temperamental performance is possible. After only 11.5 seconds, the speedometer needle races to the 100 km/h mark. On the Autobahn the “big” diesel brings the CrossPolo up to 182 km/h. Despite that, the self-igniter is extremely economical. Its average consumption is only 5.1 liters. The difference between the smaller three cylinders aggregate and the 1.9 liter is primarily the fourth cylinder.
- 15 millimeters more ground clearance and standard 17″ alloy wheels
The innovative chassis construction was primarily adopted from the classic Polo. With a front wheel suspension modeled on the McPherson principal and low lying triangular cross steering, it has a reliable layout. An auxiliary frame enables additional self-steering behavior. It acoustically disconnects the front axle from the chassis and thereby additionally improves the crash safety. The rear wheels are controlled by an interconnected steering axle. In this case, the separate array of springs and dampers enables a larger through-loading width and therefore makes the access to the cargo area easier.
To provide an extra 15 millimeters of ground clearance, the CrossPolo received the inclement weather chassis, which is optional for the series. Among other things, it has longer springs.
Just like the entire series, the CrossPolo operates with electrical hydraulic power steering. In this system, the steering support is regulated in accordance with the individual vehicle speed and vehicle weight by an electric pump. The basic configuration includes a conventional power steering transmission. Depending on the steering conditions, the hydraulic system is supplied more or less powerfully via an electrical pump with pressure. In addition to a precise and light feeling while steering, this system has the advantage of working very economically. As opposed to power steering with a conventional hydraulic pump, the energy requirements are significantly lower, which of course has a positive effect on the fuel consumption.
- Standard: Front and side airbags, ABS, brake assistant and starting at 74 kW ESP
The CrossPolo is characterized by an elaborate protection system. The basics include headrests and three point seat belts for each of the five seats. Also standard: Front and side airbags (the passenger side can be deactivated) as well as belt pretension for the front seats. The belt pretension permits an early and ergonomically optimal connection of driver and passenger to the vehicle structure. Thus the energy reduction takes place over a more extended period of time with milder detention ratio. A head airbag system can optionally be ordered for the front and rear passenger seats. In detail these airbags cover the area from the A to C column from the door commode rail to the ceiling. Result: Maximum protection on all outer seats regardless of the passenger’s height.
A so-called Dual Brake Assistant comes standard. Along with the ABS, this Brake Assistant supports the driver in borderline situations, by over proportionately amplifying the brake pedal strength starting at a certain brake pressure. In this way, the stopping distance is reduced.
In combination with the 74 kW motors, the electronic stability program ESP comes standard and is optional for all other versions.
