New, small Volkswagen with lots of space and a high level of comfort Three economic engines, agile chassis, galvanised body Starting prices at considerably less than 10,000 Euros. A new, smaller and cleverer Volkswagen called the Fox has arrived. It gives you a maximum amount of car for a minimum amount of money. It is comfortable, safe and agile. It has two doors, a large tailgate and loads of space. The Fox looks unconstrained and strong. The Fox will be available at Volkswagen partners at the end of April.
The name says it all: Due to a smart concept, the Fox may not be long, but it is over one and a half metres tall. After all, parking space headroom is never tight. In detail, the Fox is 3.83 metres long, 1.66 metres wide (without door mirrors) and 1.54 metres tall. The wheelbase measures 2.47 metres. Our new entry-level model is not necessarily the smallest on the market. It is not supposed to be either. The aim was to create a complete car at the lowest possible entry price.
No compromises: The Fox is a complete car despite the carefully budgeted price. It has everything that you expect a real car to have. We do not just mean four wheels, but a very sophisticated chassis (with ABS as standard and optionally with ESP), an optional multi-variable and sliding rear seat, a galvanized and laser-welded body and all perfect functions that have set Volkswagen apart.
Inside, the new Fox features logical controls and lots of space. Volkswagen decided to configure the compact car as a four-seater so there are proper seats and enough space for two adults in the rear. The complete rear seat also slides 15 cm lengthways and the backrest is split in the middle. Depending on the configuration, the boot volume is between 260 and 1,016 litres.
Saying the Fox is very roomy may be going too far, but the feeling of spaciousness and the actual space available are remarkable. The fact is that the Fox is an ideal city car, but is also suitable for long journeys.
A lack of interior space normally reduces the practicality and comfort of a car. The new Fox is therefore amazingly roomy. There is also a concept behind this. You will definitely not feel cramped with the elbowroom of 1,401 in the front and 1,423 millimetres in the rear - extremely high values for this class. In everyday use, this means that two tall people can sit next to each other without feeling that the car is just a bit too small.
Three engines: The new Fox will be launched in Europe with two petrol engines and one turbo diesel (TDI). All of them fulfilthe Euro 4 norm and are mounted transversely at the front. The two petrol engines deliver 40 kW / 55 hp and 55 kW / 75 hp. The TDI delivers 51 kW / 70 hp. Thanks to the low maintenance requirement and consumption, the engines provide for low-cost driving fun.
Fun and safety were at the forefront during the development of the Fox chassis. You can sense this on every metre of road when you sit behind the four-spoke steering wheel of the new Volkswagen. On the one hand, the Fox is simply fun because it neither understeers nor oversteers too much. It is extremely agile as it whizzes around corners because it simply gives you the deftness of a compact car with large chassis reserves. That is the second positive aspect of this chassis: as, under normal conditions, the car will not be shaken, you are guaranteed a level of active safety that sets the standards in this segment.
