The fastest, most powerful production car in the history of SEAT is present at the Madrid Motor Show, the León Cupra R. Once again, this model raises the power limit on the Spanish brand. Jointly developed by SEAT Sport and the Martorell Technical Centre, the León Cupra R is equipped with a 210 hp (154 kW) 1.8 20VT engine, boosting it to a top speed of 237 km/h.

The four cylinder turbocharged engine is mated with a six-speed gearbox and front-wheel drive. This engine-transmission combination is an absolute first with Seat and within the entire Volkswagen Group, making the León Cupra R one of the most powerful front wheel drive models in its segment. With this engine, the León Cupra R accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.2 seconds.

Exclusive exterior design

Among other elements, the León Cupra R stands out for the exclusive design on its bumpers with wide air intake openings, 18 inch alloy rim package with 225/40 tyres, brake system with four-pot red Brembo callipers, the model name “LEON” in the centre of the rear hatch, and the badge on the right made up of the Cupra logo and the letter “R”, and chromed, oval tailpipe

The colour black dominates the interior of the León Cupra R, from the dashboard, carpeting, ceiling cover, boot tray, seat upholstery (edged in red stitching with a red letter “R” stitched onto the backrests), seatbelts, panels, moulding and grab handles, among other elements. Even the central console, which houses the climatiser and 8 speaker stereo sound system and CD player, is black.

The León Cupra R comes equipped with standard sport seats which are both comfortable and efficient. The back seat is divided asymmetrically for three passengers. An exclusive option includes attractive front Recaro seats combined with a pre-formed rear seat for two passengers.

The three-spoke sports steering wheel, with red stitching, the gear lever knob, with a red embossed gear diagram, and the hand brake handle are all wrapped in leather. Behind the steering wheel stand four, prominent white instrument dials. And at the driver’s feet lies a sporty pedal block, with aluminium coloured pedals and left footrest.

Powerful agility with ESP and HBA

Its efficient 210 hp 1.8 20VT engine combines its strength with an almost constant torque (270 Nm from 2,100 to 5,000 rpm) from the lowest rev range; an exceptional figure in an engine that reaches a specific output of almost 118 hp for each litre of cylinder head capacity.

Its efficient, electronically managed multi-point injection and independent coil ignition are two contributing factors, as well as its enhanced airflow system made easy by both an original, five valves per cylinder distribution system and new intake and exhaust collectors, and above all, its double intercooler, which increases intake air density to the maximum. Power gets delivered to the front wheels by a double compound clutch and six-speed, tightly-spaced, progressive gearbox.

The development department at Seat Sport worked hard in order to improve the excellent chassis on the Seat León and produce an even sportier performance. In collaboration with the Martorell Technical Centre, a new chassis concept was applied, the “Agile Chassis”, which includes the modification of a series of mechanical elements that make the model respond even more quickly.

The new chassis concept, besides a complete readjustment of coil, shock absorber and stabiliser bar ratings, features other components such as newly designed silent blocks, which favour sportier handling of the rear shaft, and a new geometry of the front shaft, which includes more direct steering gear with specific rating.

The León Cupra R is equipped with a standard Brembo brake system with red, four-pot callipers (36/40 mm), 323 x 28 mm ventilated discs, 7.5J x 18″ alloy rims and large diameter 225/40 tyres. It also includes the standard ESP system with HBA (emergency brake assistance), a latest generation braking aid that activates itself in extreme conditions, greatly increasing braking capacity.

“Racing” equipment

The new León Cupra R features a standard equipment level which is undoubtedly “Racing” in nature, including attractive elements such as 7.5J x 18″ alloy rims, climatiser, ABS, TCS, ESP and HBA (brake assistance), height and depth adjustable steering wheel, and 8 speaker Aura stereo sound system and CD player. Passive safety elements include driver and passenger airbag, side airbags, collapsible steering column and frangible pedal block, height adjustable front seatbelts with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners, and three-point rear seatbelts.

For those who want to customise their vehicle even more, the León Cupra R proposes an optional package including Recaro sport seats, 6 CD loader in the glove compartment, dynamic navigation system, volumetric alarm and telephone pre-installation.
